I think you're in my head! I've lived under this pressure my whole life and long to have this freedom, but am not sure how to get there.

Susan, the first step is that longing. And then we take baby steps to a new place. I have 12 tips on this list. Maybe one resonates with you as something to try? Oh, and releasing yourself to break the "rules" is freeing. You can do it! https://michellerayburn.substack.com/p/intuitive-productivity-tips-for-less

It's freeing to not try to be someone else!

I wanted to add that I haven't chosen a "word for the year" in quite some time. I realized if my main focus is to be fully aware in the moment and focus on experiencing God's presence, I'm going to notice what I need to notice for my GROWTH, others' GOOD, and God's GLORY. It's going to look differently depending on the situation so I don't want to miss it by focusing on just one word. I'm pleased for those who want to practice choosing a word. But, it's sad to have some people act superior to me when they ask what my word is and I tell them I choose not to have one.

I only had a word accidentally one year where I had a bunch of goals that had a theme. But for the most part, it feels like pressure to me to come up with one. I don't think I have enough clarity, even when I would take a whole day to think about goals and pray, to establish what feels almost like prophecy. In some ways, I would rather sum up the previous year with a word. It makes more sense to me that way.

I especially like to spend time in reflection of the year ending because that helps me as I look forward to the new year. Plus it's the perfect time to stop and celebrate, praise God, grieve, ponder, refocus, etc. I have a friend who doesn't stop doing this just because it's January 1. She goes through Epiphany (January 6 this year). I think that's neat because the further past Christmas we get, the more quiet and calm time we have to ponder. Plus it's a play on the word epiphany. You know...you mention the word of the year almost feels like prophecy. I do know some who use the word to proclaim to God their expectation for the year. They say we have not because we ask not. Sure. But I also know a lot of people who end the year wondering where their word came to fruition. Disillusioned people because these formula type methods for looking ahead in our new year often fall short due to things outside our control. Or what we selected on a certain day doesn't really fit the flow of the year. I'm learning more and more about the rhythms of life and see where I fit rather than cramming something to fit ME.

Once again we are on the same wavelength! I have been a goal-driven girl for over 45 years, but this year I'm creating something I'm calling unGoals. It will still result in good outcomes, but minus the pressure and unrealistic expectations! Happy New Year!
