Habits for Efficient Work Flow
Hacks that help me be highly productive. Spoiler: they will sound a lot like stuff you already know!
I had the opportunity to be on the Authentic Online Marketing podcast with Ruthie Gray this week, and she asked me to share some of my productivity hacks.
Systems that lead to efficient work methods are better than an iced mocha with whipped cream on top for me. Seriously! Achieving is at the top of my CliftonStrengths, so it gives me a sense of fulfillment to do productive work. In addition, it energizes me to want to do more.
Midlife can be a time of slowing down, but if you’re still ramping up on your goals, here are three of the many tips I shared on the Authentic Online Marketing show.
1. Embrace Boundaries: Have clear boundaries with work and family. This means I protect my work time, and I don’t always ditch my task list to go have fun with my friends and family. However, I drop everything when there is a true need. Family comes first.
I say no to many volunteer opportunities so that I can say yes to the ones that matter. I’m a school board member too, so between work, family, church, and community, I do need boundaries. This also includes protecting one afternoon per week for reading, hammock time, or time with family. That’s usually Sunday for me.
2. Systemize Tasks: On the podcast, I shared some of my organizing tips and methods. My top one is using folders to immediately sort files and emails and digital tools like Asana or Trello to stay efficient.
I believe in using my existing tools before investing in new software for productivity. I do subscribe to lots of paid tools, but the basics of keeping your files in folders is a function of your computer. I sync everything with OneDrive so I can get my files on any device.
3. Schedule Sprints: I can get distracted by scrolling Reels just like anyone else. But when I need to get stuff done, I focus for a block of time and run a work timer using MyHours. I track my work time for each client as well as community activities and committees.
When I’m running the clock, I don’t want to pause it for a distraction. This keeps me on task! Then I take a stretch break and do a small job around the house before doing another sprint.
You already know some of these things—most of them! Sometimes, it takes some evaluation to decide what you really want. I make time for the things I want to do, and I let the rest go.
Which one resonates with you most? Boundaries, systems, or sprints?
If you’ve been talking about something for a while, what’s keeping you from it? It might be that you’re dreaming someone else’s dream and not your own. Or, it might mean you’re putting other things ahead of your goals.
